The secret to Joy of St Croix’s success since 1980 is that our two day bathtub refinishing process begins and ends with the paint’s edges; the boundary conditions of the paint, where water wicks, bacteria grows, and paint delaminates or cracks if the edges are not correctly sealed and protected. We start with removal of the caulking, drain basket, and overflow cover. The surface is cleaned and minor repairs are made with special attention to the drain area to assure a proper .

Refinishing of a standard residential built-in bathtub is an estimated two days. Stripping of existing finish prior to refinishing is an additional charge and an additional day.
This service is for the bathtub only – no walls. Tile walls are a separate service ordered as “tile refinishing”. One piece composite units are a separate service ordered as a “shower / bathtub combo”.

Description

 Joy of St Croix's bathtub refinishing is a two day process that begins and ends with the coating's perimeter - the main cause of coating failure of any kind of paint job...house painting, car painting,  and bathtub painting. The unprotected edges of paint can allow water to infiltrate under the coating through capillary action and hydrolysis will cause the paint to delaminate, i.e., peel and flake off. To prevent hydrolytic degradation caused by capillary infiltration the edge of the paint must be protected from water. The first day the drain plug, overflow cover, and caulking are removed. The bathtub's substrate is cleaned and prepared for painting. The bathtub is primed, painted, and allowed to cure overnight. The second day is spent sanding and polishing the coating . The service comes with a new drain shoe and overflow cover. Please note: Joy of St Croix is not a licensed plumber; we are painters. We are not liable if your drain or overflow pipe leaks or breaks in the replacement If you have a plumber that you the drain and overflow replacement. pipe if the tub has been previously refinished it will need to be stripped.

Day 1 - painting

The first day we turn your whole bathroom into a spray booth by masking all the way up the walls, counters, and appliances. We then remove the drain basket, overflow cover, and caulking for complete substrate remediation - no painting over these critical areas. Acid etching removes the low energy calcified hydrated silicate glaze which prevents covalent bonding, Silane bonding agent is applied to covalently bond the organic paint to the inorganic porcelain, and finally epoxy primer and acrylic urethane topcoat is sprayed on. The coating is allowed to properly dry overnight.

Day 2 - polishing

The second day we wet sand the entire surface to remove any dust or debris - all tubs sprayed in a home have dust and debris after painting. The topcoat is then machine polished to a mirror like reflection. This is what you are really expecting a new finish to look like - with a mirror-like reflection. The final step is protecting the paint's termination points at its perimeter edges where water can creep under it through capillary infiltration and subject the siloxane interface to hydrolytic degradation. This perimeter protection is done by installing a brand new solid brass body drain plug as a compression seal, a new overflow cover, and new acrylic latex caulking as an industrial stripe coating.

The coating does not simply "stop" at the edge; capillary action will draw moisture beneath the coating, leading to localized hydrolysis and bond failure.
